While the FDA has not issued a specific recommendation for valacyclovir, the CDC has issued a statement in the past indicating that the new advisory panel will recommend that Valacyclovir be used as a first-line treatment for cold sores and genital herpes infections in adults.
“This advisory panel’s recommendation is based on our knowledge of the public health situation, the increasing prevalence of viral infections, and the growing risk of serious, recurrent infections in public health settings,” said John A. Walsh, MD, director of the CDC’s National Center for Policy and Administration.
The CDC is currently reviewing whether the new advisory panel will recommend Valacyclovir to be used for cold sores, genital herpes, and shingles infections in adults.
“This advisory panel will not have jurisdiction over whether or not to include Valacyclovir in the treatment regimen for patients who are at least 21 and have an infection that requires medical attention,” Walsh said. “In addition, it’s important for patients to be informed about the potential risks associated with these infections and about the importance of timely treatment.”
The FDA has also not yet issued a specific recommendation on the use of Valtrex for cold sores, genital herpes, and shingles infections in adults, according to the CDC advisory panel.
“The public health advisory committee is reviewing the effectiveness of Valacyclovir for treating these infections, as well as the potential role of Valtrex in managing these infections,” Walsh added.
“The FDA is committed to providing safe and effective treatment for patients,” Walsh continued.
“We are continuing to work closely with the CDC to address the growing problem of cold sores, genital herpes, and shingles, as well as other common cold and genital herpes infections. We also remain committed to advancing our knowledge and awareness of the potential for harm and to work closely with patients to prevent and manage these conditions.”
In response to the advisory panel’s recommendation, the FDA will review the new advisory panel’s recommendations and will advise the CDC on the best available treatment options for patients and caregivers who are at least 21 and have a history of a known viral infection. The CDC will also work with patients and healthcare professionals to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
The FDA will also continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the new advisory panel’s recommendations for valacyclovir for treating patients with these infections and the potential role of Valtrex in managing these infections.
